From Fear To Fascination! An engagement with Science at Primary School

In order for children to appreciate Science, it is imperative that the “fear” around the subject be addressed. Allowing children to explore science, and do hands on experiments brings down boundaries and reinforces our belief that one is never too young to explore its magic.

On 22nd of February, students of Grade 5 exhibited some interesting and ground-breaking products, based on the gravity, light and hydraulics. There was a dazzling array of models/protypes – from hydraulic lifts, automatic sensor operated dustbins, to a state of the art broom. Some creative minds even created a quiz on States of Matter. Their exploration only goes to show that young minds, when given a platform, can do wonders.

Grade IX students educational tour to New York

The National Model United Nations 2018 conference conducted in Hotel Hilton and Sheraton from 25th-29th March in New York was an educational, enlightening and enthralling experience. Since it is an event in the world at a college level, it hosted around 5000 students this year. The sheer magnitude and diversity of the conference and students participating, credits the participants and organizers with the quality of mindfulness, responsibility and eagerness to sustain and develop the world we all reside in. Interacting with other participants, as delegates of member states and as students of Grade IX Shiv Nadar School Gurgaon and from different parts of the world increased our knowledge about the world and gave insight to the different perspective of people. The whole experience also improved our debating and negotiating skills.

At the opening ceremony we had the honor of meeting Professor Luis Moreno-Ocampo and other personalities who are active global citizens. The theme for this year was “Transform Our World”, in order to promote the Millennium Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals and to find solutions to problems effecting the fulfillment of prosperous lives for all.

Since this conference requires weeks of preparation, research, writing as well as embodying the diplomatic and collaborative spirit of the United Nations, the participants were seen to be united and collaborative without much competitiveness hindering their progress towards finding adequate solutions to current global problems. There were certainly attempts to gives ones best to distinguish oneself from the majority during committee sessions, be it through speeches, leadership, quality of content and also ‘clothes’.

The NMUN was different from the Shiv Nadar School MUN in terms of size, involvement of students, creativity and also diversity.. The creative solutions incorporated in the resolutions of the NMUN delegates was eye opening. They viewed the problems with an open mind and different perspective. As mentioned before the participation of people from different countries and cultures provided diversity in views. Delegate seminars were conducted where topics ranging from a media panel to discussions on climate change, disarmament etc. were addressed.

The closing ceremony held at the (real) General Assembly Hall were very exciting as few civilians actually get a chance to visit the Hall. We were addressed by high-level speakers of the United Nations organization who gave an insight on what a global citizen actually is. It was truly an inspirational and enjoyable experience which increased my knowledge a ten fold times and stretched my capabilities.

Athletic Meet - Primary

The glory of sports comes from dedication, determination and desire. As the wise say “In the dust of defeat as well as the laurels of victory there is glory to be found if one has done his best.” We celebrate participation much before we celebrate a victory or mourn defeat.

The balmy day at Shiv Nadar school started with the “Athletic meet 2019” for Grade III, IV and V and non - competitive events for Grade I & II. A torch, which is a symbol of knowledge that dispels darkness, was lit by our Primary School Head, Ms. Priya Nanda who then declared the meet open. The young council members and house representatives from the four houses- Lion House, Tiger House, Leopard house and Panther house carried the torch around the field and pledged to imbibe the true spirit of sportsmanship. The students of Grade III, IV and V ran across the field in different races to reach the target line. Every race brought loud cheers from their peers for their friends as well as their houses to motivate and encourage them. The individual events were followed by Gymnastics display which demonstrated concentration, flexibility and balance that is required to perform with grace and agility. It highlighted the importance and need of teamwork to grow and excel together.

Students of grade I, II participated in different themed races including my creation, getting ready for the party, go green, hurdle race and puzzle race. This was followed by a display of a martial arts drill by the students of Grade II that left the audience mesmerized, the students of Grade I participated in different themed races including packing the bags, toothpick ballista, hungry frogs, hoop- scotch and obstacle race. The event culminated on a high note for everyone.

Sports Day-Pre Primary

The 5th Annual Sports Day at Shiv Nadar school was nothing short of a grand affair. Our pre-primary stars shined through the event as they displayed various skills they had learnt through the academic year. Apart from this they also performed a drill which was well coordinated and energetic. Keeping in mind the age group of our pre-primary children, there were no races planned. The motive was not to show who was the fastest but to show that all of them can perform the skills independently and at their own pace. Some of the skills around which the activities were planned include full body balance, major muscle coordination, awareness of both sides of the body, hand –eye coordination, hand and leg coordination and palmer grip!
