Paro Anand Visit at Shiv Nadar School

The new session begins with opportunities for our students to explore different genres and meet authors who create magic through books and their myriad story telling skills. As part of our first Library-led event for this session, students of Year 2 and 3 got an opportunity to meet and interact with the renowned author Ms. Paro Anand on April 15, 2019.

Paro Anand is a Bal Sahitya Puraskar winner and often described as a fearless writer with a big heart who has written for early years to adults.

During this interaction she conducted an animated story telling session from her acclaimed book ‘Wingless’, which has been performed nationally and internationally. While she read excerpts from this book, students were mesmerized with her narration style, yearning to hear to the whole story!

Posture Perfect Device

Four students of grade X developed  a portable, cost effective and user friendly Posture Perfect Device which sends alerts for sitting in wrong position but also notifies the number of times people sit in that posture.

The brain child of Taniska Sahay, Navya Sachdeva, Aryan Verma,Tejasv Rastogi, the device works on the artificial Intelligence in correcting the posture of those who spend long hours sitting in the wrong position resulting in "text neck".the device consist of mountable cameras which capture the live video stream of body posture in the form of image frames, which is then processed by an AI computer system. It calculates the distance and angles between the different body parts like nose, neck ,left and right shoulder .After an interval of 30 minutes the user is notified about their correct and incorrect posture.

The project has won

A team of 4 students Shreya Raju, Om Shelat, Ira sidhu and  Soumya juneja designed an intelligent traffic management system that works on real time sensing and image processing of traffic to reduce the wait  time of commuters at the traffic lights. It is a simple adaptable Artificial Intelligent based traffic light using a camera and micro controller which can modify the red/green distribution time at each junction dynamically. This would cut down the fleet time of commuters, reduce air pollution and also avert potential accident due to frustration and road rage.

This low cost compatible project received significant media attention.

चिट्ठी का सफ़र!

On May 15, 2019 grade 5 culminated their first Hindi theme - चिट्ठी का सफ़र | The unit was about the timeline of communication and the various modes of communication. It felt so good to see the students presenting their work in fluent Hindi with confidence. Students showcased flap books, timeline of communication etc. They also presented a role play about the journey of letter from post box to home. It was eye catching to see students dressed as postmen and postwomen.

One could not miss scrolling through all three stamp books which had an interesting collection of stamps dated as old as those during India's Independence era.

There was a post master stationed in his post office explaining about the types of letters. Students also showcased their final draft of the informal and formal letters in Hindi in all three sections.

Students in 5 Corbett also expressively recited Hindi dohas on communication explaining their meaning also.

Grade IX students educational tour to New York

The National Model United Nations 2018 conference conducted in Hotel Hilton and Sheraton from 25th-29th March in New York was an educational, enlightening and enthralling experience. Since it is an event in the world at a college level, it hosted around 5000 students this year. The sheer magnitude and diversity of the conference and students participating, credits the participants and organizers with the quality of mindfulness, responsibility and eagerness to sustain and develop the world we all reside in. Interacting with other participants, as delegates of member states and as students of Grade IX Shiv Nadar School Gurgaon and from different parts of the world increased our knowledge about the world and gave insight to the different perspective of people. The whole experience also improved our debating and negotiating skills.

At the opening ceremony we had the honor of meeting Professor Luis Moreno-Ocampo and other personalities who are active global citizens. The theme for this year was “Transform Our World”, in order to promote the Millennium Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals and to find solutions to problems effecting the fulfillment of prosperous lives for all.

Since this conference requires weeks of preparation, research, writing as well as embodying the diplomatic and collaborative spirit of the United Nations, the participants were seen to be united and collaborative without much competitiveness hindering their progress towards finding adequate solutions to current global problems. There were certainly attempts to gives ones best to distinguish oneself from the majority during committee sessions, be it through speeches, leadership, quality of content and also ‘clothes’.

The NMUN was different from the Shiv Nadar School MUN in terms of size, involvement of students, creativity and also diversity.. The creative solutions incorporated in the resolutions of the NMUN delegates was eye opening. They viewed the problems with an open mind and different perspective. As mentioned before the participation of people from different countries and cultures provided diversity in views. Delegate seminars were conducted where topics ranging from a media panel to discussions on climate change, disarmament etc. were addressed.

The closing ceremony held at the (real) General Assembly Hall were very exciting as few civilians actually get a chance to visit the Hall. We were addressed by high-level speakers of the United Nations organization who gave an insight on what a global citizen actually is. It was truly an inspirational and enjoyable experience which increased my knowledge a ten fold times and stretched my capabilities.
