Grade IX students educational tour to New York

The National Model United Nations 2018 conference conducted in Hotel Hilton and Sheraton from 25th-29th March in New York was an educational, enlightening and enthralling experience. Since it is an event in the world at a college level, it hosted around 5000 students this year. The sheer magnitude and diversity of the conference and students participating, credits the participants and organizers with the quality of mindfulness, responsibility and eagerness to sustain and develop the world we all reside in. Interacting with other participants, as delegates of member states and as students of Grade IX Shiv Nadar School Gurgaon and from different parts of the world increased our knowledge about the world and gave insight to the different perspective of people. The whole experience also improved our debating and negotiating skills.

At the opening ceremony we had the honor of meeting Professor Luis Moreno-Ocampo and other personalities who are active global citizens. The theme for this year was “Transform Our World”, in order to promote the Millennium Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals and to find solutions to problems effecting the fulfillment of prosperous lives for all.

Since this conference requires weeks of preparation, research, writing as well as embodying the diplomatic and collaborative spirit of the United Nations, the participants were seen to be united and collaborative without much competitiveness hindering their progress towards finding adequate solutions to current global problems. There were certainly attempts to gives ones best to distinguish oneself from the majority during committee sessions, be it through speeches, leadership, quality of content and also ‘clothes’.

The NMUN was different from the Shiv Nadar School MUN in terms of size, involvement of students, creativity and also diversity.. The creative solutions incorporated in the resolutions of the NMUN delegates was eye opening. They viewed the problems with an open mind and different perspective. As mentioned before the participation of people from different countries and cultures provided diversity in views. Delegate seminars were conducted where topics ranging from a media panel to discussions on climate change, disarmament etc. were addressed.

The closing ceremony held at the (real) General Assembly Hall were very exciting as few civilians actually get a chance to visit the Hall. We were addressed by high-level speakers of the United Nations organization who gave an insight on what a global citizen actually is. It was truly an inspirational and enjoyable experience which increased my knowledge a ten fold times and stretched my capabilities.

Capstone Project

As a part of the Robotics and IT classes in school, the students are introduced to the concept of conceiving and designing a project “Capstone Project” It was great to witness how they translated the classroom knowledge to solve a real life problem

Posture Perfect Device

Four students of grade X developed  a portable, cost effective and user friendly Posture Perfect Device which sends alerts for sitting in wrong position but also notifies the number of times people sit in that posture.

The brain child of Taniska Sahay, Navya Sachdeva, Aryan Verma,Tejasv Rastogi, the device works on the artificial Intelligence in correcting the posture of those who spend long hours sitting in the wrong position resulting in "text neck".the device consist of mountable cameras which capture the live video stream of body posture in the form of image frames, which is then processed by an AI computer system. It calculates the distance and angles between the different body parts like nose, neck ,left and right shoulder .After an interval of 30 minutes the user is notified about their correct and incorrect posture.

The project has won

Familiarization Day - Grade Nursery

Eager eyes, curious minds ,beaming smiles and few teary eyed  students of Nursery attended the much awaited Familiarization Day. A process where students are escorted by the parents to the respective class so that they settle in the new environment before they take off on the school journey.

The  day  started  with the bond building activities conducted during the Circle time. There were name games and rhymes  which the children were familiar with, happily clapping and enjoying songs in spite of the new faces of friends and adults all around. The  teachers  read a story to comfort them and  keep them engaged. Every child and parent loved and enjoyed the story time and resonated with the same.

Delicious and yummy snacks were given before dispersal and their eyes sparkled with joy to see chocolate cupcakes and lemonade, which they all relished.

Towards the end they all left with smiles and waved at their newly made friends and teacher saying “ see you on Monday” and they all moved out with parents feeling more assured.

Parent's Collective Visit To KNMA

Our endeavour is to connect with parents through various engagements and build a strong ethos vis-à-vis art and culture. Towards this end, the Parent Art Collective of the Shiv Nadar School visited the KNMA – Kiran Nadar Museum Of Art.

Parents and children did a walkthrough of an exhibition by a septuagenarian artist Arpita Singh. This exhibition gave us an extraordinary opportunity to view the six decades of her art practice and is the first retrospective organized by the KNMA. Her art speaks about the strife of women and society at large.  Each of her work is as intimate as a diary-entry, documenting the everyday trepidation that surrounds her: thoughts, voices, events, news, and evokes different locales. One sees the psychological and political merging in her paintings. The use of flowers, text, guns and airplanes underlines her depiction of violent histories, mourning, or maybe negotiations with trauma.

A few of the canvases that fascinated the adults and children alike was a scene with lotuses (upon closer look – tanks), the map of Delhi and the depiction of the ‘golden deer’ from the Ramayan.

Post the curated walk the parents and children were treated to a ‘Coffee Workshop’ where a KNMA artist walked us through the activity.

Athletic Meet - Primary

The glory of sports comes from dedication, determination and desire. As the wise say “In the dust of defeat as well as the laurels of victory there is glory to be found if one has done his best.” We celebrate participation much before we celebrate a victory or mourn defeat.

The balmy day at Shiv Nadar school started with the “Athletic meet 2019” for Grade III, IV and V and non - competitive events for Grade I & II. A torch, which is a symbol of knowledge that dispels darkness, was lit by our Primary School Head, Ms. Priya Nanda who then declared the meet open. The young council members and house representatives from the four houses- Lion House, Tiger House, Leopard house and Panther house carried the torch around the field and pledged to imbibe the true spirit of sportsmanship. The students of Grade III, IV and V ran across the field in different races to reach the target line. Every race brought loud cheers from their peers for their friends as well as their houses to motivate and encourage them. The individual events were followed by Gymnastics display which demonstrated concentration, flexibility and balance that is required to perform with grace and agility. It highlighted the importance and need of teamwork to grow and excel together.

Students of grade I, II participated in different themed races including my creation, getting ready for the party, go green, hurdle race and puzzle race. This was followed by a display of a martial arts drill by the students of Grade II that left the audience mesmerized, the students of Grade I participated in different themed races including packing the bags, toothpick ballista, hungry frogs, hoop- scotch and obstacle race. The event culminated on a high note for everyone.

Sports Day-Pre Primary

The 5th Annual Sports Day at Shiv Nadar school was nothing short of a grand affair. Our pre-primary stars shined through the event as they displayed various skills they had learnt through the academic year. Apart from this they also performed a drill which was well coordinated and energetic. Keeping in mind the age group of our pre-primary children, there were no races planned. The motive was not to show who was the fastest but to show that all of them can perform the skills independently and at their own pace. Some of the skills around which the activities were planned include full body balance, major muscle coordination, awareness of both sides of the body, hand –eye coordination, hand and leg coordination and palmer grip!
