"Children must be taught how to think and not what to think"- Margaret Mead
A one of a kind event that explains the above quote and showcases the children’s learning and thought process, is the "Making Learning Visible", held on 8th February 2019 for our Kindergarten parents.
Each class planned its own set of activities across the 4 strands –English, Hindi, Maths and My World. The Kindergarteners flaunted their learning and skills through interactive games, Q & A sessions and discussions with parents, who were amazed at not just the learning but also the confidence with which the children were able to independently carry through an activity.
Our young learners spoke about animals, comparing and identifying the differences between various animal’s claws and paws for the carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. Games and activities were conducted to exhibit their understanding of word blends and number sense. By Kindergarten, our students know most of the “vyanjans” in Hindi, they were able to join the “vyanjans” to form small words.
Parents were amused and delighted to be put on the spot by the Kindergarteners, a satisfying sight indeed for all when the parents/students and teachers left the classrooms beaming with pride!
The National Model United Nations 2018 conference conducted in Hotel Hilton and Sheraton from 25th-29th March in New York was an educational, enlightening and enthralling experience. Since it is an event in the world at a college level, it hosted around 5000 students this year. The sheer magnitude and diversity of the conference and students participating, credits the participants and organizers with the quality of mindfulness, responsibility and eagerness to sustain and develop the world we all reside in. Interacting with other participants, as delegates of member states and as students of Grade IX Shiv Nadar School Gurgaon and from different parts of the world increased our knowledge about the world and gave insight to the different perspective of people. The whole experience also improved our debating and negotiating skills.
At the opening ceremony we had the honor of meeting Professor Luis Moreno-Ocampo and other personalities who are active global citizens. The theme for this year was “Transform Our World”, in order to promote the Millennium Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals and to find solutions to problems effecting the fulfillment of prosperous lives for all.
Since this conference requires weeks of preparation, research, writing as well as embodying the diplomatic and collaborative spirit of the United Nations, the participants were seen to be united and collaborative without much competitiveness hindering their progress towards finding adequate solutions to current global problems. There were certainly attempts to gives ones best to distinguish oneself from the majority during committee sessions, be it through speeches, leadership, quality of content and also ‘clothes’.
The NMUN was different from the Shiv Nadar School MUN in terms of size, involvement of students, creativity and also diversity.. The creative solutions incorporated in the resolutions of the NMUN delegates was eye opening. They viewed the problems with an open mind and different perspective. As mentioned before the participation of people from different countries and cultures provided diversity in views. Delegate seminars were conducted where topics ranging from a media panel to discussions on climate change, disarmament etc. were addressed.
The closing ceremony held at the (real) General Assembly Hall were very exciting as few civilians actually get a chance to visit the Hall. We were addressed by high-level speakers of the United Nations organization who gave an insight on what a global citizen actually is. It was truly an inspirational and enjoyable experience which increased my knowledge a ten fold times and stretched my capabilities.

While learning about Air transport during the theme I Love Transport, the children of Pre-Primary experienced meeting a Pilot who visited our school and the process of taking a flight. With a lot of excitement, the children asked the Pilot many questions they wondered about, such as “How do you fly the plane?” or “What happens when a bird hits the plane?” Along with answering their questions, the Pilot used a model of a plane and told the children the main parts of a plane and other things associated with flying, such as Air Traffic Control (ATC) and runway. He demonstrated how the plane takes-off and lands using the different wings.
For a more holistic learning, an Airport was set-up in KG corridors. The children chose a destination, filled their boarding passes, and made their own passports. They started the process by Checking-in and getting security tags on their bags. They then proceeded to Immigration counter and got their passports stamped. Thereafter, they reached the Security check where they got themselves as well as their bags scanned. They waited in the Boarding lounge, after which they boarded the flight. They experienced the inflight announcements, the safety demonstration and ordering their meals. The children had a truly enriching experience, with many aspiring to be Pilots.
No year is complete without showcasing the learning journey of children in Kindergarten. The KG day was eagerly awaited by parents and the students who were bubbling with enthusiasm to perform infront of them. The children exhibited the trajectory of their year-long learnings in different scholastic domains. The children spoke confidently as they addressed their parents and shared their evolvement with pride. The parents were glad to know what an enriching year it had been for the children, and how far their children had come over the year.
