Step into the Past: MYP 1 Crafts History in Pottery Workshop

Students of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) Year 1 at Shiv Nadar School Faridabad recently embarked on a hands-on historical journey through an interactive pottery workshop. Linked directly to their Individuals & Societies unit on the Harappan Civilization, the session allowed young learners to step out of the textbook and into the shoes of ancient artisans.

Taking on the role of Harappan craftspeople, students were challenged to design and plan a unique clay artifact, one intended to communicate their stories, values and culture to future generations. From intricate seals and symbolic motifs to functional terracotta vessels, the session sparked wonderful creativity and critical thinking.

This experiential activity brought history to life, turning abstract concepts into a tactile and memorable process. Students applied key Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills as they translated historical research into physical design concepts, thoughtfully considering how future archaeologists might interpret their creations.

Through this creative exercise, students gained a deeper appreciation for the ingenuity, craftsmanship and daily life of one of the world's earliest urban civilisations. The workshop beautifully reflected the IB MYP commitment to inquiry-based, meaningful learning at Shiv Nadar School Faridabad, reminding us that the past is best understood when we build it with our own hands.
