'Where the Mind is Without Fear'

Debate Competition: Middle School – SNS Faridabad It is better to debate a question without settling it than settle a question without debating it. – Joseph Joubert The month of May 2022 witnessed hallways of the Middle and Senior schools buzzing with incendiary thoughts and radical viewpoints, as Shiv Nadar School, Faridabad, opened the stage for the year’s first inter-house debate competition.

On 13 May 2022, students from the middle school brandished their metaphorical swords and entered head-on into a debate on the topic, Digital learning has made schools redundant. The WCH, became an awed spectator to multiple fresh perspectives, claims and renewed faith in physical schools. Returning to the stage after a hiatus of two years, the students were given insights into what a debate means and stands for by Director-Principal, Anju Wal, who expounded on the ideals and importance of a debate.

The jury was invited to share its judgement and views on the topic and student performance. The house swayed against the motion that day, reinstating what one of the debaters quite beautifully worded – Schools are not a brick-and-mortar building anymore; they are a metaphor, and they are omnipresent.

The winners on the day were as follows: First prize: Saanvi from Panther house Second prize: Divijaa from Panther house Third Prize: Shiven from Lion house Discussions and arguments reached another level of nuance on 20 May 2022, as students from the Senior school entered the stage with revolution in their heart and governance in their minds. The enthusiasm observed in the hall was the culmination of week-long preparations that entailed cut-throat competition and interesting alliances, all in search of the perfect code of good governance.

The motion before the house that day was, Religion and national politics should be kept apart for good governance. What followed was a fascinating exchange, as speakers both for and against the motion butted heads with each other while the rebutters had a field day, making it challenging for the judges to arrive at any kind of decision-making to declare the winners.

Finally, after the microphones were silenced, and the debaters seated again, the judgement was given. In order of precedence, the winners for the day were as follows: First prize: Neeyati from Panther House Second Prize: Kaashvi from Tiger House Third prize: Tie between Anavi Jindal from Lion House and Anvesha from Leopard House Hubert H. Humphrey had it right when he penned these iconic words: Freedom is hammered out on the anvil of discussion, dissent and debate. And the students of Shiv Nadar School, Faridabad, have undoubtedly set the tone and standard for such future engagements.

Eid and May Day Celebrations

Eid was celebrated by our Early and Primary Years students with a lot of zest and fanfare. The celebration was an earnest attempt to imbibe in our learners the concept of Unity in Diversity. The children were made cognizant of the fact that it is a festival of prayers, joy, brotherhood and charity.

The day began with the musical assembly ‘Sargam’ where ‘Qawwali’ and other renditions filled the atmosphere. Eid Mela was set up in the Square Circle keeping in mind the essence of the festival. Different stalls were there for students to explore: mehendi, lemonade, games, tattoo booth; the bangles corner ensured that each girl got a set of bangles which matched with her dress while the boys looked elegant with their Taqiyah or skull cap.

As the learners returned to their homerooms, their facilitators opened the discussions around Eid and the reason behind its celebration. Math and Languages were integrated in the activities planned for children. Children were given fake money to spend on the stalls. Later they gave an account of their expenses. They also wrote a reflective piece on their experience in the language of their choice.

Alongside students celebrated May Day by doing shramdaan; a contribution from their side. They cleaned their learning spaces and ensured that the staircase and ramp they use is clean. The activity was designed to forge a better understanding of the labour community among our students to respect and appreciate their efforts.

Shiv Nadar School, Noida - Decennial Celebrations

The Decennial Celebrations on April 9, 2022

Shiv Nadar School completed 10 years of its existence on 9th of April, 2022. It was 10 years ago, on 9th April, 2012, when the first set of parents and teachers gathered at the Circle of Love along with Mr Nadar, planting saplings and singing 'Hamaari hi Mutthi Mein' and the national anthem, symbolising our commitment to be future forward educators and nation-builders of the highest levels of excellence.

The celebrations started with entire community of Shiv Nadar School Noida gathering at the Circle of Love, where the Principal, Mrs. Anju Soni, reiterated our commitment to the values and philosophy that the school stands for.

The occasion was graced by Swami Prem Parivartan, also known as Peepal Baba who conducted an orientation session for the essence of tree plantation. We planted trees around the school, as a commitment to the future of the planet, for cleaner air and water, but most of all, for our own happiness! The plantation drive was carried out by our oldest and latest parents, students and teachers.

Mr. Hitesh Jalgaonkar, Associate Manager – Green Spaces, HCL Harit and Mr. Ravi Sharma from HCL Foundation put up engrossing conversations around the initiatives of HCL Harit and local biodiversity and related aspects.

The school welcomed Shafali Verma, one of our own students, from the Batch of 2023 and member of the Women’s Indian Cricket Team. Shafali not only mingled with her batch mates but also very sportingly participated in the Walk the Talk Series in which she was interviewed by her peers at school, Mariya Abbas, Shafali’s batch mate and a budding footballer and Saatvik Das, a budding sports journalist from Grade 11. Arjuna Bhattacharya, outgoing CGC Prefect 2021-22 felicitated Shafali by presenting a portrait of Shafali made by Diya Gupta of grade 8.

The Parent Partnership Office inaugurated the Decennial Edition of Reflections EKA – a collection of parents’ reflections, experiences and stories. The staff carried back a sapling to mark their commitment towards earth mindedness.

The Decennial Celebrations had a befitting finale to the day by practicing Mindfulness all together in a session conducted by the Ahimsa Trust, a practice so dear to each one at Shiv Nadar School Noida.
