'Where the Mind is Without Fear'

Debate Competition: Middle School – SNS Faridabad It is better to debate a question without settling it than settle a question without debating it. – Joseph Joubert The month of May 2022 witnessed hallways of the Middle and Senior schools buzzing with incendiary thoughts and radical viewpoints, as Shiv Nadar School, Faridabad, opened the stage for the year’s first inter-house debate competition.

On 13 May 2022, students from the middle school brandished their metaphorical swords and entered head-on into a debate on the topic, Digital learning has made schools redundant. The WCH, became an awed spectator to multiple fresh perspectives, claims and renewed faith in physical schools. Returning to the stage after a hiatus of two years, the students were given insights into what a debate means and stands for by Director-Principal, Anju Wal, who expounded on the ideals and importance of a debate.

The jury was invited to share its judgement and views on the topic and student performance. The house swayed against the motion that day, reinstating what one of the debaters quite beautifully worded – Schools are not a brick-and-mortar building anymore; they are a metaphor, and they are omnipresent.

The winners on the day were as follows: First prize: Saanvi from Panther house Second prize: Divijaa from Panther house Third Prize: Shiven from Lion house Discussions and arguments reached another level of nuance on 20 May 2022, as students from the Senior school entered the stage with revolution in their heart and governance in their minds. The enthusiasm observed in the hall was the culmination of week-long preparations that entailed cut-throat competition and interesting alliances, all in search of the perfect code of good governance.

The motion before the house that day was, Religion and national politics should be kept apart for good governance. What followed was a fascinating exchange, as speakers both for and against the motion butted heads with each other while the rebutters had a field day, making it challenging for the judges to arrive at any kind of decision-making to declare the winners.

Finally, after the microphones were silenced, and the debaters seated again, the judgement was given. In order of precedence, the winners for the day were as follows: First prize: Neeyati from Panther House Second Prize: Kaashvi from Tiger House Third prize: Tie between Anavi Jindal from Lion House and Anvesha from Leopard House Hubert H. Humphrey had it right when he penned these iconic words: Freedom is hammered out on the anvil of discussion, dissent and debate. And the students of Shiv Nadar School, Faridabad, have undoubtedly set the tone and standard for such future engagements.

Sci-Verse-2022-Mini Science Week

“Ask the right questions and nature will open its doors to her secrets”.

Taking forward the essence of this famous quote by C.V. Raman, Shiv Nadar School,Faridabad organized ‘Sci-Verse-2022’ from 14th-16th March,2022. The event took off with the activity  ‘I spy Science’ on 14th March for Grades 6-8 in which students were given a glimpse into the Scientific Method so as to familiarize them with the approach to experimentation, data collection and analysis, etc. They immersed themselves into designing experiments, conducting surveys and presenting their findings with a fervor that tells us what a brilliant future they have ahead of them.

The next day i.e.15th March began with a Science Assembly conducted by Grade 8 students that marked the ‘National Science Day’ in honor of Sir C.V. Raman’s discovery of the Raman Effect on 28th February,1928. The theme for this year - Integrated approach in Science and technology for a sustainable future - was well represented when students talked about Ancient India and Science, Contribution of Indian Scientists to the world of STEM and futuristic sci-ideas such as ‘Digital Twins tracking Health, Nanorobots, Sweat-powered Smart Watches’ etc.

The assembly was followed by ‘The Green Design Challenge’ where Grade 6-8 students engaged in ideating about a sustainable alternative for a daily life unsustainable product and created innovative, thoughtful ads for their sustainable products. It was exhilarating to see our upcoming world leaders working together towards a greener, safer environment.

Sci-Verse culminated on a high with ‘Sciencathon-2022’ i.e. the Interhouse Science Quiz Competition on 16th March enjoyed by the middle and senior school alike. Students from Grades 6-10 from each house participated in the Lap Round,Visual Round and Rapid Fire Round where the Tigers and the Lions moved on to the Finals while the Panthers and the Leopards remained runner-ups. The audience was enraptured in the final Buzzer Round also witnessed by our esteemed Principal Ms. Anju Wal as each house showcased their scientific prowess. Finally, the Tigers emerged victorious with the Lions evading triumph only by 5 points.

All three days of the Sci-Verse kept the students and teachers immersed in the world of Science,Technology,Sustainability and, most importantly, Hope for a Better Tomorrow.

Sci-Verse truly achieved what  Bill Nye rightly said, There's nothing I believe in more strongly than getting young people interested in science and engineering, for a better tomorrow, for all humankind.

Literary Week- Middle and Senior School, SNS Faridabad

Shiv Nadar School, Faridabad organized a Literary week from the 24th to the 31st of January, 2022. Middle school (Grades 6-8) marked the event with an array of activities that catered to nurture love and appreciation for literature, boost creativity, and  inculcate a reading habit in the students.

The week kicked off with ‘Musings under the Sun’, a lively session curated to bring out the creator in you. Students found a cozy spot and enjoyed free style writing, composing poems, painting, sketching and doodling on various themes. Grade 8 also had the opportunity to attend the interactive session ‘In conversation with Anju Ma’am’, wherein she spoke about her love for reading and discussed her favourite books. The insightful and engaging session inspired many to take up reading.

The activity of the following day was ‘Book Cover Design’ where students designed book covers of their own choice. Students across Middle school immersed in the process of designing covers, some of which were a re-thinking and some completely original in essence.

Story Dice, the final activity of the week, was a novel experience for the students. In groups, they rolled the dice and brainstormed the prompts to weave beautiful and interesting stories.

One of the activities taken up in the senior school was Twitter tales. In Twitter Tales, one needs to compose a story within 280 characters, including spaces ,with a  beginning and an ending. It surely unleashed the creativity and a new generation of twiterratti was born.

Grade 11 learnt how to write Haiku poetry when Ishaani ma’am and Mitu ma’am took a session with them. Haiku poetry is an entire poem in three lines with five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third. Many eleventh graders were inspired to write Haiku poetry and also did haiku jam on an app for Haiku. They shared their haiku poems and enjoyed thoroughly.

Slam poetry was organised in grades 9-11 on Day 3 of literary week. It is a genre of performance poetry that is currently trending, and it lets the poet bring out the angst within. The students wrote laudable poems and read them out aloud in front of their peers.

The culmination of the literary fest – Sahitya Kaafila was organised on 31st January.

None other than Shakespeare said “Literature is the comprehensive essence of the intellectual life of a nation.” This holds so true for a country with so much diversity, especially when it comes to languages. Each language has a rich literature, which we showcased in Sahitya Kaafila. The Kaafila was the journey traversed with the evolution of languages through a variety of literature pieces not only pan India but also from other corners of the world. The students picked up pieces from literature of different languages and gave a rendition in that language. The languages ranged from Bengali, Assamese to Urdu and foreign languages such as French, German and Russian also mesmerized the audience.

It was indeed a worthy culmination to a week-long indulgence in literature and the love for literature.

The literary week was a great opportunity to provide a window to the students’ minds and open the doors of their hearts!

A festival for promoting the love for literature, the Literary week, with its plethora of activities was truly an enriching experience for the students.
