Literary Week - Primary

Shiv Nadar School, Faridabad observed Literary Week with an array of activites through the week from 29th August to 2nd September. Literary Week is observed each year to ignite and fuel interest in reading, creative writing, etc.

Grades 1 and 2

During the week, the students of Grade 1 explored an array of activities through the story 'Rooster Raaga' and were introduced to the concept of Onomatopoeia. Taking it forward, teachers from the Grade 1 English team presented the play, ‘Rooster Raaga’ in morning assembly for the students. Reflecting on their favourite characters, all students of grade 1 participated in Cosplay of the character that inspired them.

The students of Grade 2 explored the literary genre ‘Fables’ this literary week. Each day learners were engaged with a fable and understood its various elements. Students collaborated in groups to create their own fable storyboard. They illustrated and wrote the characters, setting, conflict and resolution and the message their fable conveyed. On the day of culmination, students presented the fable storyboard they had created through a gallery walk.

Grades 3 to 5

The young learners of grade 3 commenced the 'Literary Week' celebrations with an exciting activity, 'Adjective Bonanza'. The students immersed themselves in experiential learning as they wrote numerous adjectives on their peers' T-shirts. The students were introduced to 'Comics' as a genre. They explored the various elements of comics, such as panels, gutters, speech bubbles and also, created their own comics.

Grade 4 explored ‘fables’ as their theme. Students learnt the elements of a fable along with presentation skills in integration with theatre. They indulged rigorously in the writing process which started with story planning through graphic organiser, discussing their plot with an appropriate moral and then writing down their self-composed fables in groups. It was a sheer delight to see them working collaboratively. They also presented their stories once the writing process was completed.

Grade 5 started the week with ‘Read my T-shirt activity’, they dived into the pool of vocabulary as they wrote phrases, idioms and adjectives on their peer’s T-shirts. Students explored the sense of ‘I’ through the theme of ‘autobiography’.   They learnt the elements of an autobiography and read some extracts of non-fiction autobiographies as well.  They used graphic organisers and wrote multiple drafts to write their autobiography.

The week culminated with 'Costume Play' for all students of 3 to 5. Students dressed up as a buffet of characters, ranging from legendary historical figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Rani Laxmi Bai to famous fictional characters like Harry Potter, Robin Hood, Matilda and more.

To mark the culmination of the literary week, students also attended an author session. Archana Garodia Gupta  of  'Chandragupta Maurya and the Greek Onslaught', the first book in the series of  'History Hunters', visited the school to meet and introduce the book to the  students of Grades 3 to 5. It was an enlightening and interactive session for the students.

Five days of engaging with diverse facets of literature enabled them to bring out their creative side as well as survey the language deeply.

English Extempore Speech Competition – Middle School – SNS Faridabad

Ready-made speech is a dead lion, extempore speech is a live cat. The latter connects you with the audience, the former distracts their attention.

– Rm Shanmugam Chettiar

To uphold the value of student voice and foster in learners the courage to speak their minds, SNS Faridabad organised an English extempore speech competition for the middle school. The event was graced by the Director Principal Anju Wal and Ms Deblina, the Head of International Curriculum (SNS Noida). Held in Wild Cats Hall on 20 July 2022 from 10:00 AM onwards, the event comprised one participant from each section across grades 6 to 8, speaking on a myriad of topics given to them half an hour before the competition. Coming to the stage without any formal preparation or memorised speech did not impede the contestants who were all brimming with contrarian and novel ideas. The students had to test their opinions and awareness of topics relevant to their lived realities, to which each participant had both interesting and inspiring responses.

Ms Deblina, the panel of judges and  Ms Anju Wal were invited to share their views on the event. While Ms Deblina emphasised on the importance of the courage to think outside the box to arrive at creative responses to ideas, our Director Principal, Ms Anju Wal commended the participants on their presentation skills.   Thereafter, the results were announced; these were as follows:

Grade 6: Yug Banga (6 Corbett)

Grade 7: Gunnika Khurana (7 Gir)

Grade 8:  Zoya Mirani (8 Kanha)

In one of his lectures, Ralph Waldo Emerson had proclaimed, “Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel.” At SNS Faridabad, participants from the middle school left the audience and the judges awed with their ability to persuade, convert, compel and motivate, setting high standards for consequent extempore competitions.

Welcome Back to School!

The beginning of the session, April 4th, 2022 was no less than a Red Letter Day.  The School revived full scale operations  after two disruptive, fundamentally different and defining years in Education.

The children returned to school in full numbers. Cutting across age and grade barriers, they all had one thing in common. The deep desire to be on campus, to learn, play, and experience real time impressions and real spaces. I am certain the parents matched their enthusiasm and optimism.

The eight weeks before the Summer Break have been intense and momentous. To re-fuel the school engine, revive school processes, practices and student engagement has been a labour of love.
