EDUCATION FOR LIFE THEME: Sustainable development.

We at Shiv Nadar School believe that apart from academic excellence our children need knowledge, skills, and attitude to face a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) world. Keeping up with the same idea we relaunched our education for life programme after two years. This programme aims at providing exposure and engagement to navigate and succeed in life beyond school for Grade IX and IX students.

A workshop based on our EFL theme of sustainability was conducted by Ms.Jayati Talapatra focusing on sustainable development goal 12 i.e: responsible consumption and production in order to understand how individual thinking processes impact an individual’s as well as the community’s chances of surviving in the face of resource limitations. Ms. Talapatra’s been working on Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change. Her focus is on generating awareness within corporates on the impact of business actions on the Planet and consequently, Humans. She teaches Business Sustainability in TERI School of Advance Studies and her course on Businesses and Biodiversity is a first of its kind in Indian Business-schools. She started Dilli Meri Jaan Walks, an initiative to restore Delhi’s ecology. These are designed for creating awareness of ecosystem services and taking action to regenerate biodiversity. The walks ensure that each participant takes back a concrete action item, to reduce their carbon and resource footprint and another to improve the quality of air, water, and soil of their city.

The session started by collecting a wider understanding of how fast fashion has over-consumed and how as responsible consumers we can promote both economic development and social and environmental improvement side by side.  She reflected upon the basic idea of bringing small lifestyle changes to move towards a larger goal and help the earth regenerate.

She explained how the greatest global challenge is to integrate environmental sustainability with economic growth and welfare by decoupling environmental degradation from economic growth and doing more with less. Resource decoupling and impact decoupling are needed to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns and to make the transition toward a greener and more socially inclusive global economy.

To ensure sustainable consumption and production practices necessarily entails respecting the biophysical boundaries of the planet and reducing current global consumption rates in order to fit with the biophysical capacity to produce ecosystem services and benefits. Bringing minor changes in our lifestyle right from sending acknowledgment emails to sustaining gadgets and electronics and switching to brands that promote sustainable consumption will eventually limit the depletion of resources and trigger the process of regeneration at a much faster pace. The session was enthralling and gave a lot of insight into the best practices for making sustainable development more impactful.

Namaste Deutschland

Our students participated in an event called Namaste Deutschland which took place in DPS Gurgaon in collaboration with Goethe Institue, New Delhi. Around 75 schools participated in various events and competitions. Our school put up an exhibition stall on the theme of "All about German breads", Knock-out Basketball competition and other learning by doing workshops.

Aanya Bhatia, Grade-8, won the 1st prize in Knock-out Basketball competition. Veer Mehndiratta, Grade-8, participated too and did really well.

Advik Bhanwala, Rishabh Burman, Avik Agarwal, Abeer Bhandari, Samar Raj Sharma put up an exhibition stall in DPS Gurgaon on the theme "All about German Breads". The exhibition stall was a huge success. Our students put efforts in preparation of the content. Abeer baked 3 kinds of German breads (not to forget that this idea was his own to bake the breads) Bauernbrot, Seed bread and Stollen. Abeer, Samar, Samrat and Mehak participated in other workshops on Drama and Informative sessions.

Many colleagues from the German fraternity came and personally shared with me that our students are well mannered and have high values, their content is well researched and they are very welcoming too. They prepared a rhyme impromptu to welcome people to their stall. I feel honoured to share that our stall had a massive footfall. Students and teachers from the Shiv Nadar Gurgaon visited our stall too. Students from other schools enjoyed the games prepared by our students and of course, the bread. Ms. Puneet Kaur, Head of Educational Services came twice to see our students present and appreciated their work and Ms. Veronika Taranzinskaja, Project Head South Asia Goethe Institute told the students that she tasted a slice of German culture at our stall and told Abeer that he should have his own bakery in Germany one day.

Night - In - Grades 3 to 5

Shiv Nadar School, Faridabad organized a Night-In for the students of grades 3 to 5 on 4th November 2022 in a safe and protected environment. Through exposure to such experiences, our children are able to develop life skills, build stamina, endurance and a sense of independence, while exploring various activities.

For this batch, it was the first sleepover in school and everyone was filled with high levels of energy and enthusiasm.

On 4th, children had their regular classes till 3 pm, after which they participated in some fun-filled activities such as Sports, paper crafts, dance, fun games etc. For grade 3 students, as a part of their current EVS theme, ‘Solar System’, we had planned a sky gazing activity which was led by the ‘WE the Wonder Explorers’ team.

Amidst the activities, children got to enjoy sumptuous snacks and dinner. Moving to the South block with our luggage on school buses and sleeping in the classrooms there was a different experience altogether. Children were comforted throughout by the presence of teachers, didis and admin staff. Despite exhaustion, they merrily spent some ‘Me Time’ in the rooms, playing board games with their friends and sharing stories with each other.

The morning was a cool and pleasant one. We all woke up with big smiles and devoured some alloo paranthas and milk followed by a group photograph.

Our young learners took stock of their belongings and packed their bags independently before they were handed over to their guardians.

It was indeed an extremely fulfilling and memorable experience for students and teachers alike. The bonds they have been able to build with each other and teachers will be cherished forever !!

Inter school Literary Bonanza Elixir 2.0

The Inter school Literary Bonanza Elixir 2.0 was held in Shiv Nadar School Faridabad on 4th November 2022.

The registrations started at 8 am, followed by breakfast and the opening ceremony. There were a plethora of events held across different venues. The theme for Middle school was “Planet Change and Sustainability” while for senior school it was “From War to Hope”. The events were not only in English but some of them were in Hindi, Sanskrit and foreign languages (French, German and Spanish) also. The event was opened for grade 6 to grade 12 students.

The various events were as follows-

The Turncoat event was for senior school students. It was judged by Ms Payal Kapoor, Mr Umang Malik and Ms Garima Grover. Mr. Malik is the Director of the Faridabad Model School Managing Committee. Ms Payal Kapoor is an institution in herself with more than thirty years of experience in the field of education. Ms Garima is a passionate educator who teaches English. The topic of Turncoat was WAR IS NOT A SOLUTION. The participating students did a commendable job of looking at both sides of the coin.

Dramatic interpretation of Poetry was based on a poem by Bertolt Brecht General your tank. It was a glimpse into the world of drama, plays and interpreting poetry pieces in new lights. It was an event filled with zest, vigour and, most importantly, theatrics!!

The Ad Mad show was Vigyapan Prastuti based on the theme of sustainability. It was in Hindi and turned out to be lively presentations by the teams.

Black out poetry is a very challenging form of creativity in which the participants showed their ingenuity by creating poems on the theme War to Hope. In the event Poem in My Pocket, the participants filled not our pockets but our hearts with their creativity by writing on topics like Rendezvous with Nature. Slam poetry is one of the most popular forms of artistic expressions, and the students showed remarkable zeal in their rendition of slam poetry which they had self composed. Soliloquies are used as a device in drama to let a character make their thoughts known to the audience. The contestants in this event presented the perfect blend of voice modulation, expression and dramatic gestures.

The debate topic in disputandum for grades 6-8 was “Ecotourism is a Fad”. It was in alignment with our overarching theme of sustainability and planet change. All the students spoke so emphatically that the judges had a tough time deciding the most impactful speaker in favour of and against the motion. The activity 'Just a minute or JAM' is an impromptu speech where the speaker is supposed to express the ideas on the given topic, within the duration of a minute.

Visual Interpretation of a poem works as a team with a poet and an artist. The topic for visual interpretation was Hope and it was presented beautifully both poetically and artistically.

Creation is the highest form of application of knowledge, and the event category Swarachit Kavita delivered an array of beautiful emotions. In the Shloka Competition, students gave wonderful renditions of shlokas that were in sync with the theme of planet change and sustainability.

Melody is one of the three main parameters that makes music out of a collection of sounds and beats, alongside harmony and rhythm. Music knows no language and this was proven by the students who created music in languages beyond most of our comprehension in the event Melody in Music.

Watching participants from different schools, debate, dissent, perform and use their armoury of words to create powerful statements on the themes of From war to hope and Planet Change and Sustainability, was indeed a treat to watch. Elixir 2.0 was a melting pot of ideas, creativity and a wonderful day of meeting and competing for the young minds at Shiv Nadar School Faridabad. The event built strong partnerships in the student community in the cities of Faridabad, Gurgaon and Noida.

The names of the 11 participating schools were-

Readers make Leaders

The library at Shiv Nadar School is much more than a quiet place to read. They are our knowledge hubs, where children learn to explore,  investigate, empathise with the characters, question, and express themselves. To help our children continue to enjoy themselves on their reading journeys, the junior library puts out new contests each week and provides assistance in navigating the literary world. Each month, the contests aid in the exploration of various forms of literature through poetry, prose, and films. Please find attached a document outlining all of the Junior Library's initiatives and activities during the month of September.

Seed Ball Making Activity

“Sustainability is not just about doing less harm but doing more good.”- Jochen Zeits

As part of ongoing EVS theme for grade two ‘Climate Change’ there have been elaborate discussions about how the world is changing. Learners have been introduced to various case studies to understand the concepts better. In depth discussions on global warming, the impact of climate change while situating it within the concept of interdependence of the world.

As we approach the final week for the theme, the focus shifted to how an individual can create a positive impact. It began with the inspiring stories of Jadav Molai and HCL Harit Upvan Sorkha Project to help our learners realize that change begins from them. The theme followed a ‘Case study’ pedagogy with an intent to create awareness and inspire our little learners to become the climate change advocates. With this vision in mind, the theme concluded with the learners learning to make the seed balls. They understood how the seed balls can help bring in a positive change. But what better way to learn than to get oneself involved into actually creating seed balls!
The learners of grade two made seed balls in the Amphitheatre . A session was led by Ms. Shalini Chhablani to help the learners understand the what and why of seed of balls.
One could see them excited for learning and confidently own their responsibility of doing their bit in bringing the much needed change.
