The Seeds of Learning: Listening Walk

To explore the environment using our auditory senses, the students of Nursery along with their teachers went for a Listening walk in the school premises. The purpose of the walk was to develop their listening skills. The children heard the story ‘The Listening Walk’ by Paul Showers. They put on their listening ears, a piece of craft created with paper cutouts of ears and a hairband and went for a walk within the school premises. They listened to different sounds in the environment and had to identify them. Back in the classroom post a discussion they illustrated the different sounds they heard. An enriching activity, thoroughly enjoyed by the children.

Spic Macay

Shiv Nadar School’s endeavour has been to promote different art forms, be it dance, music or visual arts. We invited the famous Odissi dancer, Ms. Vidushi Kavita Dwibedi, who captivated the young audience with her graceful movements and expressions. She started with a small introduction to the Odissi dance form, one of the oldest surviving dance forms of India. History tells us that like some of it’s contemporaries, Odissi too was a temple dance performed by the "Devdasis". The "tribhangi", i.e., the independent movement of the head, chest and pelvis is what sets this dance form apart.

Earth Day Celebrations

For the past 40 years, Earth Day has been celebrated around the world to call attention to some of our most pressing environmental and social problems, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and dwindling natural resources.

The day started with a beautiful message where students were reminded of 5 actions towards safe earth. The whole school, whether it was the students, support staff, teachers, guards, admin staff or helpers took part in this endeavour and initiative. Each one of them took a pledge to save Mother Earth by doing simple doable actions. Our continuing effort in our daily life will make this beautiful planet thrive.

To understand - the magnitude of the problem, students celebrated Earth Day on April 22nd, 2019

Grade 1 Activities: To emphasize the importance of food and water shortage, the students conducted a food drive in the dining hall of the school. They requested their peers to serve themselves small portions of the food rather than piling their plates and return for seconds, thus avoiding wastage. The students discarded the waste in the biodegradable and non-biodegradable baskets. They also made a list of any leakages observed. A glass "Earth Jar" was placed in the dining hall for the students to write why and how they should, could and would save food and water.

Grade II-IV Activities: The students took the responsibility of managing the indoor plants, setting up a schedule with the help of their teachers to water the plants. They planted seeds of Aloe Vera, Coriander, Lemongrass and Tulsi. Students wrote poems and shared why it is important to take care of our home, Planet Earth.

Grade V Activities: They announced the Earth Hour and took on the initiative to unleash a week-long crusade to encourage the entire school to switch off electric lights and ACs in favour of and using natural light for an hour. They made posters and campaigned vigorously to motivate the entire school. The electricity consumption data was shared in the assembly as a proof of their contribution to a larger goal of conserving our precious resources.

Afsana by Rituparna Ghosh

On 27th April 2019, children's of age group 6-8 years ( Grade 1-3) of Shiv Nadar School, attended a story telling session titled as Afsana by Rituparna Ghosh at Radisson Blu , Faridabad . Rituparna Ghosh has an eminent personality and was so real into her character while narrating the story to the students. The story began with a song where few lines were said by the narrator and then humming was done by the students and the audience present in the hall. She even used props to introduce certain sounds like of rain, and by herself she produced sounds of different animals that were the part of the story. Not only  this she even chosen few people from the audience to play the characters of the story which she was reciting.

The story was all about being of what an individual is and not thinking to be perfect, because every time there will be some imperfections which one would have. Like a lotus flower blooms in the morning and then closes it's petal at night , knowing that it can only bloom in the morning , similarly one should be happy and satisfied of what the individual is rather than questioning it.

The students enjoyed the story shared by Ms. Ghosh and had a great time over there. They even received a small token of gift by the team of the story telling session organizers and they were happy at the end.

'Our Planet'

As a part of building their understanding about the theme for this year's Wild Wisdom Quiz, students went to WWF auditorium, Lodhi Estate, New Delhi for an official screening of first episode of Netflix series, ‘Our Planet’. Apart from our school, there were representatives of few reputed Delhi based schools like Manav Sthali School, Springdale School.

Students learnt about the biomes of Earth and the flora and fauna which flourishes in these biomes. The video was not only knowledge gaining but also reflecting as to how this flourishing species of flora and fauna is diminishing and in turn our planet  is being affected due to human intervention. Students made notes and also participated in the quiz based on the episode. Few of our students won bookmarks for giving correct answers to the questions.

The “Protean” tour

The "Protean" tour

International exposure and good mentoring go a long way in shaping the budding talent of our young cricketers into tomorrow’s professionals. In our student version of the “joint military exercises”, we sent a team of 12 players under the tutelage of 2 teachers to learn and maybe teach a thing or two to the Proteas.

The Proteas or The South African Cricket Team is a team to reckon with. Their student version lived up to that repute, but our “Pride” were no less. Despite the tough competition, of the 8 matches played we won 6! The feather in the Shiv Nadar School cap was the stupendous achievement of playing matches of 40 overs. A feat applauded by the hosts and their mentors too. The hosts were represented by 4 prominent schools and 2 clubs, KZN and Chatsworth Club.

Chatsworth Club is famous for its star player AB DeVillers, a cricketing legend.

Team Shiv Nadar School was mentored by the current Director of South African Cricket Board Mr. Shaun Warner and CSA level 2 coach Mr Craig Yelverton from Ireland.

Along with the honour of playing with worthy opponents, our students also won some distinguishments, like T-shirts and caps.

Aarav Desai scored 2 centuries against The Hillcrest High School and a half-century against Chatsworth club

Sanket Agarwal scored a hattrick against Winterton Primary School.

Krishang Sehrawat earned the best wicketkeeping cap.

Siddhanth Biswal, at 11years, was the youngest player across all the teams.

Aryan Vadera scored 225 runs and took 2 wickets.

Soham Dawar scored 135 runs and took 8 wickets.

The culmination of the fortnight visit to Durban, South Africa, was the chance to play at the Oval at Petersburg, the 2003 world cup final stadium. The grand finale match was against a team of senior players, some of whom play at County level, our boys stood up to the challenge and were victorious.

All work (play) and no sightseeing would leave the tour incomplete, on their way back from Durban to Johannesburg the teams visited the Oshaka Beach jungle safari and Dolphin show. An apt end to a successful tour.

Capstone Project

As a part of the Robotics and IT classes in school, the students are introduced to the concept of conceiving and designing a project “Capstone Project” It was great to witness how they translated the classroom knowledge to solve a real life problem

Posture Perfect Device

Four students of grade X developed  a portable, cost effective and user friendly Posture Perfect Device which sends alerts for sitting in wrong position but also notifies the number of times people sit in that posture.

The brain child of Taniska Sahay, Navya Sachdeva, Aryan Verma,Tejasv Rastogi, the device works on the artificial Intelligence in correcting the posture of those who spend long hours sitting in the wrong position resulting in "text neck".the device consist of mountable cameras which capture the live video stream of body posture in the form of image frames, which is then processed by an AI computer system. It calculates the distance and angles between the different body parts like nose, neck ,left and right shoulder .After an interval of 30 minutes the user is notified about their correct and incorrect posture.

The project has won

PHD Chamber of Commerce – Junior Asthithva  Sanman.
