Founder's week - Joy of Sharing
Our Founder’s week celebrated as Joy of Sharing is in tandem with the philanthropic vision of our Founder. It is important that the students learn to express their gratitude through sharing, nurturing their compassionate and caring traits.
This was best explained by this year’s newest entrants to the School, our Nursery batch, sharing began in his “mummy’s tummy” with his twin brother.
Since the celebrations were online, charity truly began at home. The activities acknowledge and share our gratitude to those who are less privileged, to those who are helping us! The students were encouraged to help with household chores, spend time with elderly grandparents and reach out to the extended family members, share their toys with siblings, cook surprise meals, feed animals, do something extra special for the guards/delivery boys and more.
Each day was filled with exciting story sessions, making gratitude cards to express what they were thankful for, learning about famous personalities such as Mother Teresa, Baba Amte and Kailash Satyarthi, understanding how their efforts made a huge difference in people’s life.
The teaching staff too got together to share dry rations with the didis and bhaiyas, many students did the same at home with the help of their parents, by donating food and other resources.
Although the Joy of Sharing is celebrated for a week, the spirit of giving is inculcated in our students all year round.
Bhasha - Summer engagement at the Shiv Nadar School Gurgaon
Shiv Nadar School, Gurgaon - summer engagement project
The aim of this project was to introduce the students to a wider world of creativity and expressions and explore mediums beyond the AHA programme that the school has. Students were provided with the opportunity to understand language through words (theatre), body (dance), music (vocals and instrumental), and pens/brushes (visual arts). This cross-pollination approach helps develop a wider sense of art forms.
The word bhasha means “a medium and or process by which one may express their thoughts and expressions, verbal and non-verbal. Hence, the Co-scholastic team aptly named the summer engagement activity for 2020, “Bhasha-Language of the Arts”! A programme that allowed the children to explore and express themselves through various well-curated activities over the 4 weeks of summer.
Theatre students were led through various workshops where they understood the concepts of theatre, emoting, action-reaction, dialogues, writing scripts and more.
Bhav is the basic bhasha of dance and the students sensitized about different forms of dance, various components and elements of this as a form of communication.
Music transcends all barriers of culture and language. Our students were led through songwriting, evolution and history of Indian music and musical instruments.
The visual arts students were taken through a journey of ‘flora and fauna’. Art as a medium to document in olden days to using art to explain scientific concepts spurred the students to create their own masterpieces.
Students found and learnt new forms of expressions building a language of their own, which made them more confident and stronger as an individual.
Summer Project - Co-Scholastic
This summer, when so many of our students found themselves trying to adjust to new realities brought by these trying times, the Co Scholastic Arts team of Shiv Nadar School, Faridabad, mindful of these challenges, worked towards letting the arts find new ways to permeate children's lives.
The team felt like this was the right time to effectively articulate the value of arts in as many ways as possible for our children.
The Music, Visual Arts, Theater and Dance department worked towards enabling and inspiring children by designing various Workshop - based modules for engaging children in summer vacation, so that creativity, beauty and goodness could be fostered and children find their expression. Several online sessions were conducted, children from Grades 3 to 10 came up with initiatives and displayed a great sense of immersion through their beautiful renditions in various Aha baskets. Some projects culminated into performances, while some are still ongoing and seamlessly mixed with their regular learning.
Teaching children on an online platform provided us with connecting with them in a whole new context. Children learnt to derive creative solutions to the challenges posed by the online platforms, learnt some new tricks and got artistically stimulated and productively occupied.
Arts truly proved to be a fundamental component to children's health and well-being this summer of 2020.

Shiv Nadar School Gurgaon - Asteroid Discovery Programme
Teddy Roosevelt said, “Keep your eyes on the stars, and your feet on the ground”. Our middle and senior students did just that. With their feet firmly planted on the ground, they eyed the stars and their ilk. This was the Asteroid Discovery Program of the International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC), a joint venture of STEM and NASA (STEM & Space). An enabling opportunity for students to explore high quality real astronomical data and look for asteroids. Students received astronomy data from observatories in real-time and were guided to use the software to analyse the data and discover new asteroids. These preliminary discoveries are only the first discovery of an asteroid, it takes about a year of observations before a few are confirmed as provisional discoveries and are formally recorded. A team with 16 students and a mentor-teacher participated in this programme and made several preliminary discoveries. The enthusiasm was palpable in their diligence and hard work as they broke up into smaller groups to post discoveries of about 30 asteroids over a period of a month. This excellent performance and contribution were appreciated by NASA in the form of certificates. From the Principal's Desk - 16th July
I am reminded of the beautiful song by Simon and Garfunkel- 'Bridge over Troubled Waters',as I reflect over our roles in the present situation.
We strive to be the bridge of love, care, and connection for our children in these trying times, and do our best to ease their distress or be that iridescent ray of hope.
Do listen to the song, it remains the iconic soulful rendition of hope.
Let me sum up for you how the last few weeks have been.

Pastoral Care
We have created two Pastoral Care Groups, one for Primary and the other for Middle and Senior School.
Teachers who comprise both groups have been thoughtfully selected and coached to enable and support the 2 counsellors in the school.
These two different groups of teachers will be the first point of contact for the children seeking help, a conversation, expression of stress or low moods and such like. They are what I would like to call the Psychological First Aid Group. They will report into the Counsellors who report into me.
The Pastoral Groups will be headed by the Counsellors, Tatiana Atreyeva (Primary), Manisha Massey (Middle/Senior).
That does not in any way mean that if a child/parent wants to reach out to the counsellor directly, they cannot. Yes, they can when the problem/concern is serious.
Please know that the Pastoral Group is not to address academic or curriculum/online time table related concerns. As the name suggests they are for care and comfort.
The home teachers will soon be sharing the concept note of their roles and responsibilities along with their names and ids with you.
Joy of Sharing Weeks
Each Year in the week of 14th July we start the Joy of Sharing Week. It is an unmissable date for us, the Birthday of our Founder, Mr Shiv Nadar. The week is celebrated to instil in our children the essence and significance of Sharing.
Sharing a service, sharing knowledge, sharing in abundance, sharing unconditionally and experiencing the sense of joy that fills the heart.
The date, 14th July, also reminds each child that he proudly carries the name of his Founder, the person whose life story is the stuff that legends are made of, an inspiration for the children, teachers, parents for many lifetimes to come.
You must have received the schedule of the JOS week from the home teachers. Join in the webinars of dance, music, stories, Dastan e Gohi, mental health and more.
Assessments
We are in the midst of Assessments for grades 6 to 10. I am glad that we have a more refined online model in the second round of assessments this year. Our children are nothing short of heroic, adapting to innumerable changes, coping with uncertainty, anxiety, and displaying unmatchable resilience and grit to get past the challenges.
My best wishes to you.
Stay Safe, Stay Healthy and Stay Afloat.
Best Regards

The Literula Week @ Shiv Nadar School, Gurgaon
The Literula week.
"That’s the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet" 1
In motion with the need of the hour that is being safe by staying at home and tuning in to the virtual classes, what better could we do for our children than inculcate and reiterate in them, the love for reading? With this thought in mind, we at Shiv Nadar school decided to carry on with our tradition and sprinkle the pixie dust by virtually taking them to the land of books via the virtual celebration of Literula Week.
If anything, Shiv Nadar School is a constant. Constant in change, ever-evolving, ever-learning, ever adapting. This year the challenge was manifold, the teachers had to “virtually” hold the attention of their young wards, make the online sessions fun and get some learning in too! That’s where the “Book Fairy” was called in to help introduce the magic of reading to the Kindergarteners. Parents and grandparents conducted storytelling sessions.
The basic premise of Literula Week is to introduce books to students, age-appropriate, learn the parts of books, how to take care of books and develop a collection for the magic of joyous reading. Every grade picks an author and a book or two written by them, the class then spends the week reading, discussing and weaving in some activities around the same. Some creative pursuits were learning to make bookmarks, book covers, headgears, make or create musical instruments, dressing up as characters from the books that fascinate them. Students were encouraged to express their interpretation of the stories, recreate the starting or ending, re-title the story, keep the basic premise of the story but add some new twists or spice it up a bit, create puzzles and quizzes, riddles in Sanskrit!
This year our middle and senior school students also learned the usage of technology to express their creativity with padlet and nearpod. The much loved “circle time” brought forth insights about the student’s thoughts and change in the thought process as their life experiences increased.
Keeping the tradition of Author visits alive, Grade 6 was visited by Author, Vaishali Shroff. Her book, “The Adventures of Padma and the Blue Dinosaur” was much loved by the students. She kept them interested and showed them a real fossil of the dinosaurs from her collection. For the seniors there was a session with Col. Gopal speak about “How Reading Influenced Me”, Monica Ma’am, spoke about “The Happiness DOSE” and Ms Saumya Kulshrestha explained the nuances of poetry.
The Literula Week is not a just part of the Shiv Nadar School curriculum, it’s the very DNA of the school where reading is promoted from an early age.
